Introduction
One of the things I really enjoy doing is giving talks to corporate and community groups. The feedback on my presentations has been consistently good. People have found them energetic, entertaining, and informative. These are the main topics I offer workshops on, and they can be customized for your organization. I can also give workshops on any of my specialties. If there are other topics you are interested in, please let me know.
Stress
Stress is an important issue in the corporate environment, especially in the Bay Area. Long, slow commutes combined with long workdays packed with increasing demands create a very stressful environment. Added to this are all the other stressors, such as trying to balance work and home, trying to live within your means, and trying to find time to do all the other things that make life worthwhile. This can add up to a situation that robs the joy from people’s lives.
There are, however, several things that can be done to reduce stress. It may not be possible to shorten the commute, but it is possible to change our attitude toward it, which can reduce frustration. It is possible to learn time management techniques so that work stresses can be left at work. Exercise is a great way to reduce stress levels. This workshop outlines several stress-reducing techniques that can be quickly and easily implemented.
Response Team Training
With all the natural disasters and an increase in terrorist activities, it is hard to watch TV or listen to the radio without becoming stressed. Many organizations are now preparing for these critical incidents by training laypeople to provide basic services in the event of a disaster. My training prepares the responders for the psychological stress of the incident, both their own and the victims’ responses.
This workshop gives an outline of what people can expect to experience both during and after a critical incident. It also gives suggestions to help responders deal with those they are helping. Knowing what to expect can be of tremendous benefit as people then know what is a normal reaction, what is more serious, and how to take care of themselves.
Depression
Depression robs people of their joy and energy, leaving them feeling lifeless and unable to function. Family members and coworkers get frustrated and confused as they watch loved ones and friends change from energetic to lethargic. Attempted solutions from others can backfire, leaving the depressed person feeling even more depressed and guilty that they can’t “just snap out of it.” The good news is that there are effective treatments for depression.
This workshop outlines the symptoms of depression so that people can distinguish between feeling down for a day or two and being clinically depressed. It will also help others understand what the depressed person is experiencing. In addition, the workshop covers effective treatments, including Cognitive Therapy, which uses no medications and has a very low relapse rate. Finally, it will discuss methods to find help.
Sleep
“I didn’t get a good night’s sleep last night.” That’s a common complaint. Our stressful lives leave us worried at night. Our busy lives prevent us from scheduling enough time to sleep. We also have a lot of worries about what will happen if we don’t get enough sleep.
This workshop begins with basic education about the sleep cycle, including dreaming. I then outline several steps that increase the odds of getting a good night’s sleep. People who follow these steps are usually able to get to sleep quicker and wake less during the night. They get a better quality of sleep without the use of medications.
